The Old Spanish Trail became the fifteenth national historic trail when Congress adopted S. 1946 in November and President George W. Bush signed the bill early in December 2002.


History of the Trail

10,000 plus years of use by area tribes. Trail near areas sush as Mesa Verde.
1519: Spanish conquest of Mexico
1769: Spanish establish San Diego in California
1776: Fathers Escalante and Dominguez explore Utah and come through Cedar City
1829: Spanish Trail used to transport horses, furs, wool, and slaves from Santa Fe to Los Angeles, 1120 miles with pack horses and mules taking 2 ½ months each way.
1848: America defeats Mexico and ends the period of the Old Spanish Trail
1848: Mormon Battalion in California brings first wagon on Trail. Brigham Young asked for bulbs, cuttings, horses, grain, corn, and garden seeds "to feed the people and beautify Zion."
Present:   Modern highways use much of the rought of the Trail. Interstate 15 from Parowan to Cedar City is on the trail as is Las Vegas to Barstow and on to San Bernadino.
2002: Recognized by President Bush and the Congress as a National Trail, perhaps the oldest trail of the American West. Over 100 miles of the trail lie within Iron and Washington counties.
2005: Orchestra of Southern Utah commissions "Spanish Trail Suite" by Marshall McDonald and Steven S. Nelson
2006: Premiere performance of the Suite with performance by local Paiute drum circle and dancers as prelude
2007: Filming enhancement video by Video Ideas of Chattanooga, Tenneessee
2008: April 10, premiere of video accompanying the music of the Spanish Trail Suite
